The Faces Behind girlSTEM

Janet Meng

Founder, President, Director of Operations

Hi everyone! My name is Janet and I’m a senior at Castilleja School. Throughout my experience in various STEM courses, clubs, programs, and camps, I’ve noticed the disproportionate numbers of girls participating in these activities. At girlSTEM, our goal is to combat this issue and be a part of the efforts to challenge the status quo. I'm in charge of operations and developing curriculum so f you have any questions, feel free to come to me! Though I am fascinated by all STEM subjects, I am incredibly passionate about computer science and I have been immersing myself in the new and growing field of machine learning and artificial intelligence! Aside from my passion for STEM, I love to play water polo, swim, run, teach, give back to my community, and watch Netflix :-) We’re so thrilled about girlSTEM and we cannot wait to meet you all!

Serafina Cortez

Vice President, Director of Outreach, Director of Communications

Hi there! I’m Serafina, and I’m a senior at Castilleja School. I’m new to girlSTEM but am no stranger to the lack of women’s representation in STEM fields. Ever since I was little, I’ve loved to read and write but never thought of myself as “good” at STEM subjects until middle school. Surrounded by supportive peers, I gained confidence in myself and discovered how much beauty there is in STEM–math, and science, in particular. I also love to write, and while English is not the “E” in STEM, I am always trying to find ways the two connect. Other than writing, science, and math, I love to swim, play water polo, the ukulele, and brainstorm ways to make every space more diverse and inclusive. I am so excited to meet everyone and become a part of the girlSTEM team!
